One year of blogging… the good, the bad, and the ugly.

One year of blogging… the good, the bad, and the ugly.

Well, here it is.  We’ve made it one year at Lau Family Travels blog.  This year has been quite the learning process, and honestly sometimes I feel like I completely FAILED at this blogging thing.  Do you want the real scoop on blogging?  Read to find out about the good, the bad, and the ugly of blogging!

The good, the bad, and the ugly of blogging…

Just as with anything there are good things and bad things when it comes to blogging.  This past year of blogging at Lau Family Travels has been a real roller coaster.  And not the kind of roller coaster I like to go on!  When we started we had so many dreams and goals.  Our heads were in the clouds and we thought that we were going to be making it big within months (because that’s what all those other blog articles say out there).  We were wrong.

The ugly of blogging.

I’m going to start backwards, because I’d like to end on a positive note.  Hopefully you make it to the end of this blog post and don’t leave thinking that I’m a total complainer!  With that being said, here’s the ugly of blogging (in my opinion).

Most of the blog post articles out there that say that they are making tons of money blogging are saying that because they are in some sort of affiliate program where if you click on their link and buy whatever it is they are “selling” then they make a commission.  So THAT’S how they are making tons of money.  It doesn’t mean necessarily that you will also be successful.  It’s sort of like an MLM company, and I’ve never been good at those.

There is a LOT of misconceptions and misinformation out there.  There are also a lot of blogger courses that promise to make you successful if you follow their steps.  I’ve taken their courses and I’ve made steps to change our blog and our style and guess what happened?  Our traffic decreased.  Because I didn’t enjoy blogging anymore.  Which brings me to the next section…

The bad.

This blogging thing has crushed my confidence.  I was putting my heart and soul into our Lau Family Travels blog.  I was reading as much as I could about successful blogging and SEO practices, taking courses, studying our analytics, etc.  In our first 6 months of blogging our views were going up each month and I felt so great about our direction, but then something awful happened.  In October our views drastically decreased and have gone down ever since.  December was our worth month ever and I was doing everything “right”, except I wasn’t enjoying it anymore.

I think honestly that’s what it comes down to.  I was over thinking every little thing because I wanted it to be successful SO badly.  And when you over think stuff it never turns out the way you want it to.  I put a lot of pressure on myself to be perfect (something I do quite often) and it didn’t happen.  So usually when things happen like that I quit…  but not this time!  It’s been one year that had successes and failures, but I’m not going anywhere.

Blogging makes us sad sometimes

The good.

There have been a lot of good things about blogging.  This year we started this project as a family and it has brought us closer together.  We have goals and dreams TOGETHER (even though we haven’t met them yet).  That is the best gift about deciding to do this.  Maybe we aren’t making any money off of this thing, but what we did make was worth more than cash!

I’ve also met a lot of really great people through the blogging world.  I have met people that are working hard towards their dreams too and we encourage each other instead of tearing each other down.  It’s refreshing to know that there are people out there like me and that I’m not all alone in this struggle that I’ve brought on myself!  Ha!

And lastly, this blogging journey led us to trying out having our own YouTube channel!  That has been a successful failure as well, but it has been FUN!  We enjoy making the videos and when we hear about people watching our videos it brings a smile to my face.  Some people think they are boring, but to each their own!  Someday maybe we’ll have more content to make them more exciting!

I love this post- My one year blog-aversary is coming up in the next few months and I’ve been feeling like I’m riding the same rollercoaster as you! Very grateful to have met all the wonderful people in our Disney blog support teams, and at the very least, I get to read about Disney all the time, and that makes me happy.
Wish you all the best with your next year, don’t give up! We’re reading!

The blogger world is a TOUGH world! But we have to keep doing what we’re doing! 🙂 Thank you for your kind words! I really appreciate it!

I am so glad to hear someone else say this! The same thing happened to me! Yes, I still want to learn from others, but intuition and passion are just as powerful! Thanks for sharing your experience!

I had to keep it real! Once it becomes a chore it’s time to change things! This year is going to be more about my passion and excitement for the parks, Disney, Universal, travel, etc as compared to “the business of a blog”! Don’t give up, friend!
